About the Sega-Portal.net

The story of how the Sega-Portal came to be is quite a fascinating one. It all starts back in 2014, when I was a young teenage boy discovering the world of retro gaming. Around the same time, I found a website about a retro gaming museum near me. I can't remember how, but my dad decided we should go there — even though he was not a gamer at all. We went to the museum, and there were shelves packed with pretty much every gaming console ever made (even stuff like the Virtual Boy). At some point, I discovered the SEGA Dreamcast. Back then, it felt like a premium gaming system. It was heavy, futuristic, and it caught my attention immediately.

My first Dreamcast

Fast forward to 2019 and I bought my first Dreamcast. I remembered the museum a few years prior and at the time and I was really excited to finally being able to play all of the Casts games. However the games that came along with my system just weren't my thing at the time. But I suppose as time goes by we tend to change our tastes for videogames. Because a few years later in 2022, I was really getting into the Dreamcast again (and other SEGA consoles). I was enjoying my system, playing games and frankly having more fun with my Dreamcast than with my Playstation 5.

Coding like it's 1999

When I was doing my intership for my bachelors degree, I was invited for a coding convention. On the convension there were multiple workshops and speakers with different subjects. One of them caught my attention which was named "Coding like it's 1999". I was one of the (if not the) youngest person in the room, but that didn't bother me at all.
The workshop was about how people coded websites in the 90s. Old HTML, small little 'hacks' to get certain things/tasks done. Ever since the workshop was over, I always wanted to build a website in the style of Web 1.0. Roughly one year has passed (time of writing: 17 April 2025) and within the last year or so, I got an interest in playing the Dreamcast online. I looked up guides on how to do so, ordered the right parts and eventually I got my Dreamcast online. Another few months after that, I got the idea to log all of my retro-projects big or small on a website (such as getting your Dreamcast back online).

The Ultimate Combination

So I wanted to make a website for all of my retro-projects and hobbies. I also wanted a new project to put on my portfolio, but I wanted the project to stand out. Eventually I got showerthoughts: "What if I made a website for the SEGA Dreamcast?". I got really excited for this idea because it was a match made in heaven. Everything just clicked, It was something I tought was cool to build, It's a project that stands out and I get to learn new things along the way. Not soon after I started to think about how I was going to design and build the website.
And one week later... Sega-Portal.net was born.
